The Earth Is Yahweh's: Psalm 24:1

Sunrise over rolling green hills and a winding river with wildflowers in the foreground

This was the verse of the day on my Bible app this morning, and it has been sitting on me ever since:

“The earth is Yahweh’s, as well as its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it.” (Psalm 24:1, LSB)

Read that slow. The earth is His. Not just the ground and the trees and the rivers: its fullness. Everything in it, and everybody on it. The people who dwell in it belong to Him too.

Stewards, not owners

We talk like we own things outright. My land. My house. My money. My time. Psalm 24:1 says we are holding all of it on loan. A steward takes care of what belongs to somebody else, and one day he gives an account for how he handled it.

That changes how a man works his own yard. You do not trash what is not yours. You tend it, you keep it up, and you stay grateful for the use of it. It also changes how we treat people, because the verse does not stop at the dirt: the people dwelling in the world are His as well.

What I am taking into today

Stop acting like any of this is ours. The earth is Yahweh’s, and so are the people on it: we are stewards, not owners. Live like it today.
